Confirmation Bias

Confirmation bias is the tendency to favor information that confirms our existing beliefs or values , while ignoring or downplaying information that contradicts them. This can lead to biased decision-making and hinder our ability to consider alternative perspectives.

  • Seeking confirmation: We actively seek information that supports our existing beliefs, often disregarding information that contradicts them.
  • Interpreting information: We interpret ambiguous information in a way that reinforces our existing beliefs, even if other interpretations are equally plausible.
  • Favoring confirming information: We give more weight to information that confirms our beliefs and downplay or dismiss information that contradicts them.
  • Recalling information: We are more likely to remember information that confirms our beliefs and forget information that contradicts them.

Being aware of confirmation bias is crucial for critical thinking and forming well-informed opinions.
